Getting Back on Track

train track

Dear Readers of This Blog,

I want to apologize for my long absence. I had good intentions at the beginning of the year to post to the blog regularly. Unfortunately, my body had other plans, apparently.

As some of you may already be aware, I have a condition where my immune system attacks my gastrointestinal tract, at random and without warning; I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2000. In addition to the terrible symptoms of this autoimmune disorder, I also suffer several complications, sometimes they are quite severe and even life-threatening, which happened earlier this summer.

The inflammation in my colon, small intestines and stomach were so severe this time that I ended up developing multiple internal abscesses. Some made exits in the lower abdominal and perineal areas, but one did not burst and drain on its own. It kept swelling and growing until I developed an internal pocket of infection and swelling almost the size of a football. I developed septicemia and had a WBC count of over 30K. I had to have emergency surgery to drain it, and things were starting to look up, until it was discovered that I actually have an extensive sinus tract connecting some of these abscesses, including the huge one. This is called a fistula, and now I am going to need more surgery to treat it, and it will need to be performed by a colorectal surgeon.

My disease has caused some other complications over the past year, and since the medications that are supposed to control this disease don’t seem to be working anymore, my doctors want me to consider having my colon removed and a stoma installed. They have wanted to do this before, but I have been trying to avoid it. In the past, I would have really bad flares of my disease, but, I was always able to go into remission by taking steroids and changing the other immune system altering drugs. This time, it hasn’t worked, and, if it doesn’t start working soon, I may have no other choice but to have the colon removed, and possibly some of my small intestine resected.

So, that’s why I’ve not been posting. I do plan on trying to get back to writing soon. I just saw a cooking challenge to eat at home for a week, and, I am thinking about starting it, and blogging about what I am cooking each day. I will tell you a little more about that in a separate post.

If you’re still reading my blog after this extended absence, I just want to say, “thank you,” I appreciate your patience, and, I am going to do my best to reward you with lots of fresh, original, interesting new content in the coming days and weeks!
